** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE **

Fort Worth, TX - March 15, 2025 - Trek for Trevor, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to promoting safe hiking and exploration through preparation, awareness, and education, has expanded its premier safety initiative—Trevor Spikes —to serve northbound Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) hikers at one of the most critical junctures of their journey: Kennedy Meadows South.

In partnership with Triple Crown Outfitters (TCO)—a beloved gear outfitter located at the base of the Sierra Nevada and operated by iconic long-distance hiker and author Jackie “Yogi” McDonnell - the program will now be available under the new banner Trevor Spikes “North.” Beginning with the 2025 PCT hiking season, thru-hikers can receive 20% off traction devices (Kahtoola MICROspikes and K-10 Crampons) as well as ice axes (Camp Corsa and Black Diamond Raven Pro), available online and in-store at TCO.

“This partnership means everything,” said Doug Laher, Executive Director of Trek for Trevor and father of Trevor Laher, who lost his life on the PCT in 2020. “At the time of Trevor’s accident, he wasn’t in possession of his MICROspikes® or ice axe as they were waiting for him at his next town stop. Our mission is to make sure no other family goes through what we did. If just one hiker walks into Kennedy Meadows unprepared and walks out equipped and informed—that’s a life potentially saved.”

Since its inception, the Trevor Spikes program has helped more than 400 PCT hikers safely traverse dangerous snow and ice conditions. In the San Jacinto Mountains alone—where Trevor tragically fell—snow and ice rescues have decreased by 82%, resulting in over $75,000 in taxpayer savings from reduced Search & Rescue efforts.

“Partnering with Trek for Trevor just made sense,” said Jackie McDonnell, owner of Triple Crown Outfitters. “The Sierra Nevada mountains is where the trail gets real. It's where hikers transition from desert tread to alpine terrain, often with little-to-no experience in mountaineering conditions. This program fills a life-saving gap.”

As with the original Trevor Spikes program; founded in 2021, Trek for Trevor will continue its partnership with the Fowler-O’Sullivan Foundation (FoF); another hiker safety nonprofit whose mission is to provide assistance to the families of missing hikers. “Safety shouldn’t be an afterthought,” added Cathy Tarr, Executive Director of the Fowler-O’Sullivan Foundation—a longtime partner in the Trevor Spikes initiative. “Together, we’re working to make sure more hikers come home.”
